Port Pirie Operations

McMahon Services and the Port Pirie Ten by 10 Project

Over many years there has been enormous concerns over atmospheric lead pollution at Port Pirie. In particular, the adverse effect that has on developing children. Various measures have been taken over time by the Port Pirie smelting operators to lower these levels. In the most recent initiative Zinifex and the Port Pirie Council have embarked on an action plan to lower the atmospheric lead levels by 10 points over 10 years. tenby10

The ten by 10 project is all about reducing blood lead levels in the Port Pirie community, to ensure children’s blood lead levels meet the national standard of 10µg/dL. To achieve this goal, a significant focus for the Smelter has been to identify specific areas of the plant that allow for the fine particles of dust containing lead to escape, as well as increase its understanding in how these lead dust particles stay on site where they could potentially be blown off site and into the community.

McMahon Services will be heavily involved providing greater frequency in maintenance and cleaning. Additionally, McMahon Services have been chosen to carry out capex works to create better processes.
